The research activities during the PHD studies yielded an experimental model for monitoring honeybee colonies, useful in research, for early pollution detection, but especially in production, by automating a few of beekeeper's observations and optimizing his activity. Design requirements are deeply rooted in reality, established by professional beekeepers. Unlike similar systems, this prototype has increased reliability, by using a super-capacitor for energy storage, and a flexible sensor structure. Apart from usual parameters (temperature, humidity, weight), the systems offers hive sound spectrum and hive entry traffic information, by counting bees using a new method, more precise and energy efficient than the usual solutions (still under testing). No structural changes are required for installation and the device does not hinder the beekeeper in his work. The system sends data using the WiFi protocol, and a gateway device is available for remote apiaries, linking them with the mobile data network. An energy efficient and easy to use solution is provided for data storage and display, using free resources, dedicated to the IoT environment. The experimental devices and results gathered over an entire year are detailed in the end. The system is still a prototype, under continuous development, to become a professional product.
