This thesis deals with theoretical and practical elements of Industry 4.0, presents experimental results and ways of implementation in the particular case of a company dealing with custom furniture manufacturing and interior design. A summary of technologies used in the context of Industry 4.0 information systems is presented, followed by several chapters dealing, theoretically and practically, with distributed components of the experimental system. The aim of the experiments was to achieve a high level of adaptability, predictability, reliability of the whole industrial and business process. This goal was achieved by using a combination of the Internet of Things, cloud systems, systems interconnection and advanced data analytics, among others. This new vision defines the Industry 4.0 ecosystem as a connected, yet decentralized set of service providers and service consumers within the factory, vertically and horizontally integrated to align with business, manufacturing and entire supply chain processes. I started from securing raw material sources using a distributed IoT system for sustainable forest management. Within the manufacturing process, I integrated monitoring and improvement of power usage, as well as a Cyber-Physical System for product quality assurance. I created a formula to measure and compare the reliability of complex sensor-cloud systems, dividing them into five main areas. In addition, I integrated IT components that support just-in-time supply, microservices for administrative, commercial, production, warehouse and personnel departments, creating a digital twin.
