The thesis aims to develop an innovative platform that exploits the advantages of the Internet of Things (IoT) concept, of wireless sensor networks (WSN), of unmanned aerial and surface vehicles (UAV/USV) integration, and of low-power communication technologies that have made remarkable progress in recent years. Device-layer contributions represent a development beyond the current state-of-the-art following the implementation of a method for selecting the communication technology and the interval between successive transmissions based on sensors data and the innovative Pseudo-Edge layer. Contributions to the Connectivity layer using LoRa technology involve applications dedicated to the Internet of Medical Things and to the increasing of the quality of life. Moreover, at Connectivity layer, an algorithm for optimizing the positions of UAV and USV vehicles is proposed for the communication between a served WSN and the gateway of the hybrid network, defining, in advance, the most important notions related to the propagation in the terrestrial, aerial and aquatic networks to understand the proposed solution for optimizing IoT systems. Among the studied models, we can mention two-ray, 3GPP, and free space propagation models. Finally, the results of a measurement campaign for the analysis of LoRa technology performance and for comparison with the theoretical models proposed in the thesis are presented, developing mathematical models characteristic to the experimental area and conditions. The influence of antenna gain, vegetation attenuation and other phenomena such as reflection and diffraction were highlighted. The PhD thesis can be a starting point for the development of a complete IoT architecture, unifying the contributions regarding the IoT layers responsible for data acquisition and the optimizations performed at the Connectivity layer.
